Gadgets and Gizmo's: The Rise Of All Things Techy...

There are so many gadgets and gizmos on the market at the moment, and the number of products just keeps increasing. So why do we love them? They are costly, sometimes pretty useless and yet we are more than prepared to splash the cash on the latest must-have gadget.

It seems strange to me, as a woman, but i guess men are much more concerned with having the latest gadget. There is significant peer pressure on men to be seen with the new gadget that comes out. But with the credit crunch are people going to be able to afford to buy the gadgets when they come out?

Gadgets and gizmos are what every guy would like to find in their Christmas stocking. Nearly everyone has an iPod it seems (EXCEPT ME) and i think the latest mobile phone encourages the same demand. Maybe its just whatever Apple touches?! When the iPhone came out there were queues in mobile phone stores as people wanted the latest accessory to be seen with.

2009 Gadgets: What Will Be Hot This Year?

When the year comes to an end it is always interesting to try and evaluate what might be big in the following year. In 2009, i wonder what we will all be trying to get our mitts on...

MSI X-Slim X320
Competition for being thin is rife! The MSI X-Slim X320 is a mid-spec laptop that is under 20mm thick, how cool is that?! If its top performance you're wanting then you might want to try something else, but for looks and "slim chic", this is a laptop that is hard to beat!

Sony Reader 2.0 PRS-700BC
The latest e-book that everyone will be talking about - it might just make the clumsy old book obsolete...or will it? These e-books are quite pricey and some prefer the tangible element of turning an actual page in a book rather than doing it on a gadget.

SanDisk Slot Radio
For all the Apple haters out there, then this is the much-welcomed alternative. Perfect for those who love their digital music without the Apple name attached.

These are just a few of the gadgets people will be wanting to buy in 2009, so be the first!

News: Swimming Gadgets - Water Music

We all know swimming is good for us, but have we ever considered underwater gadgets to help make this popular exercise regime even more great? We all know about the waterproof watches, but in terms of something really exciting, I'm loving this new idea of underwater gadgets that mean we can listen to our favourite songs whilst splashing around.

Thanks to a new generation of high-tech waterproof gadgets, you can pop your iPod into a sealed armband and listen underwater through a waterproof headset, or download your favourite songs on to an all-in-one waterproof player. Is this the best idea ever? I think it's pretty cool, not that i do a lot of swimming, but if i did, i would definitely want to be able to listen to my favourite music as i do length after length.

I am curious to know just how safe this all is, though. I mean, i wouldn't even trust a supposed "waterproof" radio in the shower, let alone going swimming with your music playing. After everything you get told about mixing electrics with water, does anyone else just feel a little bit sceptical about all this?

Anyway, the truth is out: swimming fanatics are going to love this new idea, meaning you don;t have to listen to others by the water's edge droning about the weather. Even drowning out the noise of kids screaming has to be a favourable option?!

So where do you get one from?

I like the Finis SwiMP3 from http://www.underwatersounds.co.uk/. It allows the swimmer to listen to music by conducting vibrations through the bones in the skull, via two plates fastened to the head by the goggle strap. Sounds a little dangerous, but apparently the sound is excellent and it has 1GB of memory to store your favourite songs on.

Underwater gadgets are going to be the next "must haves", so if you want to be the trendiest guy or girl at the pool, then it is definitely worth investing in an underwater MP3 player!

MP4 Media Players - Better Than MP3 Players? What's The Difference?

Okay, basically, i am curious to know why there hasn't been the same sort of hype about MP4 Media Players as there was about MP3 Players. I mean, is there really not that much difference between the two?

Firstly, it should be noted that both MP3 players and MP4 players are compression technologies for converting standard analog audio tracks to smaller digital computer files. So, for example you can convert music tracks on a standard CD to your MP3 or MP4 player.

The MP3 format became so popular because it allowed people to store lots of songs on one device; and its portable. The sound quality was excellent and this prompted people to invest in an MP3 player and bin the old portable CD player or Walkman. Then comes along the MP4 player, which is really just an advanced version of the MP3. MP4 media players are largely used to store digital audio and video files.

So is it worth buying one?

Well, i haven't met anyone yet with an MP4 player, yet nearly everyone i know has an MP3, so maybe people aren't that interested? Gadget guys will love them, but i just don't know if anyone else feels the need to 'upgrade'. I think most of us have everything we need in our MP3 player.

iRiver MP3 Player vs The iPod

I have an iRiver MP3 player and i have had it for about 4 years now. I got it for the long bus journeys to work every day and i wanted something that looked really cool.

I remember seeing the iPods before i bought an MP3 player, and i was just so unconvinced. I don't know what it was, but apart from the funky colours, i really didn't like them. I had a play around with my friend's iPod to see what all the hype was about, but i just didn't understand! I found the scroll wheel very fiddly and if you scroll too fast you end up skipping past the song you want etc, so i just gave up. It clearly wasn't the MP3 player for me, so i turned to the iRiver.

Now, this iRiver MP3 player that i got was the H140 Multi-Codec Jukebox and, at the time, it was the most expensive in the shop. Not sure what possessed me to get it, but i liked the functionality and it looked good. As a pretty non-technical sort of girl, i didn't take into account all the extra features it had. I was just so sick of having the iPod thrust at me, that i wanted anything but the iPod! So i opted for the iRiver MP3 player. Not so much as a mistake, more like just a complete waste of money...

I still, to this day, do not know what half of the features on my iRiver do. It's easy to work, but that's about it. All i want it for is to play my music at maximum volume, and it does this perfectly. I think i remember reading a review online that the iRiver H140 had excellent sound definition and was perfect for people who like their music loud. That was probably what prompted me to buy one, because i also recall a few negative reviews about the iPod, saying the sound quality was very poor for such a 'cool looking' gadget.

Buy an iRiver again? No, i don't think so, but i still wouldn't buy an iPod!

A Unique and Unusual gadget!

I was browsing the web earlier and found a great unusual gadget that is bound to be a big hit this Christmas.

Meet Pleo, the electronic, ahem, dinosaur. Intrigued? Well, this is no ordinary toy. An unusual gadget? Definitely.

Each toy starts life as a just-hatched Camarasaurus, until it finds an owner, and then it develops into an almost real-life pet. The more time you spend with this creature, the more it develops its personality. Then come the mood swings and the bad habits.

If you have a dog you will already know how much attention they crave and how much time they take up of your day-to-day life. We have a Labrador and 'demanding' is an understatement. So why would i want to go and purchase something that requires so much attention comparable to my dog? Well, the fact is that Pleo is very cute (as dinosaurs go).
He has bright blue eyes and a kind of longing 'be my friend' look to him that i can't resist! He can even blink his eyes. So what else does Pleo do? Well, here's a small list:

  • Sniffs

  • Stomps

  • Hoots

  • Honks

If he gets hungry you'll know about it because he starts becoming irritable. If he gets over-tired he will be a bit miserable too, but that's where you have to do your mothering duties and ensure that this little electronic baby is well looked after. Pleo has 4 different moods:

  • Happy and Curious

  • Playful and Lively

  • Scared and Surprised

  • Sad and Vexed

You can control these moods by monitoring how much time you spend with Pleo. Neglecting him will just never work. See this as your new full-time pet.

Want your own unusual gadget in the form of a dinosaur? Well, he costs around £250, so i doubt you will see him as any sort of 'stocking filler'. This is a toy for the child/adult who has everything and wants a little bit more...and who also has a lot of time on their hands.

If you thought looking after your Tamagotchi was bad, then Pleo is ready to take the crown of 'most demanding electronic pet'. Great!

Christmas Gadgets; Tasteless and Tacky?

We've all seen the array of Christmas gadgets on display around November time, from singing Snowmen to dancing Santa's. The choice is yours, but do we really like all this novelty stuff?

Personally, i don't buy into it. It screams of tackiness and lacks taste. The true spirit of Christmas seems somewhat lost with Christmas gadgets. I don't like the cheap plush toys that sing an annoying song and try and get you in the Christmas spirit. To me, Christmas decorations should be traditional. I like this unusual twig deer that would look great in a festive window.

Available to buy from Christmaswrappedup.co.uk

However, i am only too aware that some people love the Christmas gadgets and if you want to start planning your Christmas purchases then BHS always has a great selection of novelty gifts. The best thing about buying novelty items is that they are perfect stocking fillers and children love them.

For an unusual take on Christmas gadgets, you might be interested in trying a snow machine. This would be the ultimate Christmas party! Great for kids and big kids(!) who want to turn their garden into something a little bit special for Christmas. Cybermarket.co.uk is a fab site offering snow machines. The ultimate Christmas gadget!

Unusual Gadgets

About a month ago i heard of the new Sony Reader, a gadget which can store all your favourite books on a tiny handheld 'mini pc'. It holds up to 160 ebooks and costs around £200. So are unusual gadgets all the rage now? It would seem that we are looking for cost effective solutions to the simplest of things...even carrying a book with us on a journey.

I do think the Sony Reader is a great idea, though. It uses "E ink" and book pages can be viewed at all different angles. However, the best part is the option to magnify the text. I usually find reading a book with small print can make my eyes hurt, so, thanks to Sony, i have the potential for a solution.

The downside? The gadget has no backlight and is hard to view in bad light.

Unusual gadgets are not uncommon anymore. Who would have thought we would be buying an alternative to reading a book by turning the pages? Dickens would turn in his grave!

Here's more information about the Sony Reader.
